Neither This Nor That Are Equal: Global Fallout from the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election

In the most electoral year in human history, the American vote on November 5 stands out.
The outcome depends on real economic conditions (excellent) and perceived ones (poor), on the deep divide within U.S. society, on the choices of the three major ethnic minorities, and in the seven swing states. Biden’s and Trump’s platforms could not be more different in fiscal policy (public spending and taxes), industrial policy, energy, and the fight against climate change. But also on the institutional front, with the Republican candidate ready to change the rules in a bid for revenge. The effects on financial markets, trade flows, and the dollar.
