The Economic Consequences of Mr. Trump: Problems, Risks, and Policies in the U.S.

America’s global dominance is no longer uncontested and is undermined by the weight of public spending on interest payments. In many areas—economy, finance, and the role of the dollar—U.S. power remains solid, while on the military, technological, and industrial fronts it is being challenged or even surpassed by China. The four structural weaknesses (public finance, external accounts, healthcare, and demographics) are challenges that must be addressed to restore America’s global position. Trump’s measures risk worsening some of these issues and only partially solving others. The surprises may not be over.
